HSE updates asbestos guidance

02 February 2010
Sasha Wood

The HSE has published revised guidance on managing asbestos risks, which is available to download for free on its website.

The new guidance, entitled Asbestos: The Survey Guide, replaces the previous MDHS 100 guidance called Surveying, Sampling and Assessment of Asbestos-containing Materials and is aimed at anyone surveying or removing asbestos from business premises.

Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations, the person responsible for non-domestic building maintenance is required to assess the asbestos risk and provide a detailed survey to workers involved with repairs, demolition or asbestos removal.

The guide explains the survey’s role in minimising asbestos risk and offers advice on what to cover in the survey, such as the position and condition of the asbestos.

It also contains information on the appearance and likely location of asbestos-containing materials and more detail on carrying out refurbishment and demolition surveys.

Along with examples of best practice, the guidance provides information on the role of the asbestos surveyor and how to find a competent one.

“This updated and user-friendly guidance clearly sets out the role of the survey in managing asbestos and really helps people make sense of it and relate it to real-life situations,” said the HSE’s asbestos programme manager, Steve Coldrick.

“We’ve worked with more than 30 organisations to develop [the guide]. We wanted those people who were most likely to use the guidance to suggest what they would find most useful.”

The guide is available to download here.
