The HSE plans to make its charged for publications available free of charge online from this Autumn. The executive will begin to make around 250 publications, including the "L" series of approved codes of practice (ACoPs) to health and safety regulations available free on its website in Adobe PDF format starting from 1 September.
Priced publications currently cost up to £70 in hard copy form and are only available online by paid subscription to the HSEdirect service.
The change forms part of a planned revamp of the HSE website throughout 2009 and 2010. The site is being redesigned to make it more accessible, to offer streamed information to employers and workers and making it more visible to web search engines. An example of the new design is in the waste and recycling section of the site at www.hse.gov.uk/waste/
The HSE says that around 100 of the most popular currently priced publications should be available on the site as PDFs at 1 September and the rest will go up by the end of March next year.
Hard copies of the guidance will still be available and will be charged for through HSE Books.
